5. Give Employees the Space They Want
The Los Angeles Times reports that employees who perceive a breakroom as a pleasing environment are more likely to want to stay in the office for snacks and lunches. Before you assume what employees want, conduct an internal study to note how much time employees spend at their desks and in similar office spaces. Then, ask what features they'd love to have in a breakroom to ensure employees have a space they'll appreciate, use and embrace. According to the Staples 2016 Workplace Index study, 83% of employees say that a well-stocked breakroom results in happier employees, while 53% say that a well-stocked breakroom results in more productive employees. Here at the KC Chamber, the breakroom was intentionally named the “Family Room” when we moved into our offices here at Union Station. It’s become our gathering space, with comfy chairs, a long bar-height counter for company celebrations, Roasterie coffee that flows all day, even the TV that broadcasts March Madness each year for our bracket challenge. The Chamber’s Culture Club coordinates a healthy Snack Shop, operated on the honor system. Plus, staff has access to a commercial-grade Keurig that the Chamber leases for free through our Staples partnership (you can get one too! Email for details). How is your organization using the breakroom to promote a healthy company culture?
