233 KC Area Businesses, Organizations Receive Workplace Wellness Certification

With the average American spending 47 hours a week at work, businesses can be a great resource for promoting health and wellness.  It’s also true that healthier employees are more productive and a healthier workforce means lower costs for company health insurance.

This year, 233 area businesses and nonprofits have been awarded “Workplace Wellness Certification” from the KC Chamber’s Healthy KC Workplace Wellness initiative.   That’s an increase of 20 companies over the 2016 number, and an increase of 102 over the 2015 number of certified companies.

The certified businesses, nonprofits, and other organizations have made wellness a priority.  Healthy foods in the cafeteria and vending machines; workout facilities on site; smoking cessation programs; meditation rooms – those are just a few of the ways businesses are encouraging good health for their employees.

“We’re delighted to see the growing number of organizations in Kansas City that have made a commitment to the wellbeing of their employees and their families,” says Kelly Murphy, Chair of the Workplace Wellness Action Team, and Senior Director of Human Resources at KCP&L.  “Wellbeing can take many forms, and is accessible to organizations large and small.  In addition to programs to help educate and inform on building activity and healthy food choices into daily life, companies continue to offer more in the way of creative programming on reducing stress and improving mental health.  Companies are also designing space to foster collaboration, optimize movement and healthy lighting.  The Workplace Wellness team and the KC Chamber continue to put Kansas City on the map as a destination for workplace wellness.”

Each certified company filled out an extensive questionnaire outlining their health and wellness efforts, covering nutrition, physical activity, tobacco cessation, work-life balance, and the design & built environment.  Here are a few examples from among the 233 companies and organizations certified this year.

Pro Athlete, Inc. (contact: Chris Hawkins, Wellness Program Manager, 816-392-3385)
Pro Athlete, an ecommerce company specializing in the sale of baseball and softball equipment, again receives Platinum level certification, the highest level.  Chris Hawkins says they focused first on nutrition and physical activity, and are now looking at ways to enhance mental health: The company provides dieticians who meet one on one with employees; a full time personal trainer; Yoga, meditation, and stretch classes; full gym; cardio room; pool, sauna; hot tub; racquetball and basketball courts;  spa – all onsite.  Hawkins says, “We are on the bleeding edge of health and see the bigger picture. We do all this because we truly believe that healthier employees are happier employees.”

Girls on the Run (contact: Lana Stenner, Program Manager, (816) 935-6818
Girls on the Run is a nonprofit that inspires “girls to be joyful, healthy and confident, using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running.”  This year, the organization jumps from Honorable Mention to Platinum level certification.  Lana Stenner says, “Our goal this year was to reach Gold, not knowing there was a Platinum level,” adding, “We want to be authentic for our girls.”  Girls on the Run allows time for physical activity during the work day and has a space dedicated for that purpose.  They provide healthy food options and offer nutrition coaching services for their employees.

Your Wellness Connection, (contact: Dr. Michelle Robin, Chief Wellness Officer, (913) 962-7408
One of 2017’s Platinum level companies, Your Wellness Connection focuses on disciplines including chiropractic, Chinese medicine, massage therapy, nutritional and wellness coaching, and movement arts.  Dr. Robin says, “We focus on whole person health, which includes mental, physical, and social, amongst other concepts.”  Among its good nutrition efforts, the center provides healthy lunches 1 – 2 times a week, and offers green smoothie supplies and a blender to employees.  Employees also receive a 20 percent discount on all company products and services.

Congratulations to the Chamber’s 2017 Healthy KC Certified organizations:
