AdventHealth Shawnee Mission Earns Five Stars in Updated CMS Quality Ratings

MERRIAM, Kan. – AdventHealth Shawnee Mission has earned five stars once again from The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ (CMS) Overall Hospital Quality Star Ratings for July 2023. AdventHealth Shawnee Mission is one of only 11 hospitals in Kansas and one of seven in the Kansas City metro area to earn the highest possible rating. Only 483 hospitals out of the more than 4,500 U.S. hospitals surveyed earned five stars.

The Overall Hospital Quality Star rating (overall star rating) summarizes a variety of measures and how a hospital performs across five areas of quality, such as treating heart attacks and pneumonia, readmission rates, and safety of care. For 2023, the overall hospitalrating is basedon five measures: Mortality, Safety, Readmission, Patient Experience and Timely & Effective Care.

CMS first revealed an overall star rating for hospitals in July 2016. The rating allows consumers to compare individual hospitals to others locally and nationwide. While patients are encouraged to seek the nearest hospital in case of an emergency, Hospital Compare providesa place for those who can plan for their care to research their options.
