FROM THE KC CHAMBER'S PRESIDENT AND CEO When the dust settled from the Paycheck Protection Program, it was obvious there was a problem. Of the 4,677 PPP loans awarded to Kansas City area businesses, only 24 went to Black-owned firms, 34 to Hispanic-owned firms, and 33 to Asian-owned firms. The issue: too many minority-owned firms don’t have a relationship with a bank, which would have eased their application for federal dollars. Read Article

United Way of Greater Kansas City will partner with local businesses and influencers to launch the first-ever United By You Day on Saturday, October 22. This one-day, citywide event will activate several businesses in all six metro counties that United Way supports in a shared giveback opportunity throughout the city. The purpose of United By You Day is to raise awareness and inspire community action for residents to become change-makers — or, as United Way calls them, Waymakers — and drive community betterment for Kansas City, together.  Read Article

Statement on Amendment 4/MO Ballot

The Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce opposes Amendment 4 on the upcoming Missouri ballot. Amendment 4 permits the Missouri Legislature to mandate that the City of Kansas City, Missouri devote no less than one-fourth of its general revenues (up from one-fifth) to fund the Kansas City Police Department. A recently announced agreement is expected to help returning citizens break a cycle of struggle that’s historically been reinforced by a criminal justice system advocates say is set up to make them fail, said Kyle J. Benson-Smith. The Kansas City District SBA Office and two local nonprofit organizations held a public signing ceremony Wednesday afternoon to finalize two Strategic Alliance Memorandums (SAMs) that will provide microloan financing opportunities and other resources to formerly incarcerated entrepreneurs.
