Named for civil rights activist and former Centurion, Bernard Powell, since 1980 the Centurions Leadership Program has recognized alumni who demonstrate outstanding leadership, deep commitment to service, and clear passion for the improvement of the Greater Kansas City area in Bernard Powell’s memory. BEYOND VIETNAM: A TIME TO BREAK SILENCE

Beyond Vietnam: A Time to Break Silence, commemorating the 55th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King’s historic address and call to action against the war’s racial and economic inequities. The location will be shared via email. Light refreshments will be provided and all Centurions actives, alumni, and friends and welcome to attend this in-person event. LUC: BOB KENDRICK

Bob Kendrick is the president of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, and has served in that capacity since 2011. Bob has helped to raise almost $20 million in an effort to amplify the work of the NLBM. He is a pillar of the community and has received several awards for his leadership and service to the community. Bob will share his leadership journey and lessons that he has learned with our cohort. GLAMA – ORDINANCE PROJECT

2-4:00 p.m.

The DEI Committee is hosting a viewing and discussion of the Ordinance Project at UMKC. The Ordinance Project tells the story of the contentious struggle to pass an ordinance in Kansas City, Missouri prohibiting discrimination in housing, employment, and public accommodations based upon sexual orientation and HIV status. Emerging from the local chapter of the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power, activists struggled for nearly four years (1989-1993) to secure passage of the ordinance. Directed by UMKC doctoral candidate Austin R. Williams, the 90-minute film won the Celebration of Courage Award at the 2018 Kansas City LGBT Film Festival, and the Juror’s Choice Award at the 2019 Kansas International Film Festival.
