Bar K Hosting All-Day Event on International Homeless Animals Day to Help Address Crisis in Local Animal Rescue Community

The rescue community in Kansas City is in crisis. There are too many animals in need, straining limited resources. One recent day, the City’s animal shelter housed 280 animals; its optimum number is 140-150. Some days they receive 40-60 new animals, while adopting out as few as five. Other local shelters are in a similarly dire situation. As a result, through the first half of this year, euthanasia in shelters is up a heartbreaking 150%.

To help address this emergency, Bar K is hosting an all-day event on August 19 – International Homeless Animals Day – to raise awareness about the crisis and try to find as many new adopters and foster families as possible, as quickly as possible.

“We have an incredibly caring community of thousands of dog lovers,” said Leib Dodell, co-founder of Bar K. “Once they understand the seriousness of the problem, they will want to help. Not everyone will have the ability to foster or adopt immediately, but we can still save countless lives. And those who aren’t able to adopt or foster can help in other ways.”

Bar K has invited the local rescue community to come to the event on August 19, bringing dogs in need of homes. They will have multiple speakers to share critical information about the current crisis, and ways that the community can help. Bar K will also have information about low-cost spay/neuter programs, microchip clinics, and other resources that are part of the long-term solution to homeless animals. Local legislators and other policymakers and influencers have also been invited.

Every dog adopted or fostered at this event will receive a complimentary Membership to Bar K, so they can come back as often as they (and their new families) like, to get much-needed socialization and recreation and live their best lives. Bar K encourages the entire dog-loving community to come out and be part of the solution to this crisis. Bar K believes that together we can ensure that no healthy adoptable dog dies in a shelter, simply because they are out of space.
